DVD up conversion VS Blu Ray

So as some of you know I am getting a new tv in about 35 days time. Now when I am out on BF I also want to pickup a player as well. The problem is that a friend of mine and I are arguing about this. You see I rent and burn dvd's to a single layer dvd. "My argument is I pay to see it in the theater I pay to rent it I should be able to own it? But that is another time. Anyway he is saying that if I buy a dvd up conversion dvd player my picture will look just as good as blu ray and I will hardly be able to tell the difference. My argument is that the video is already compressed and yes it will fill in the missing pixels but will not look nor sound as good as blu ray. can anyone shead some light on this? Also a side note when I burn them I do not compress the audio.

you wont make a single layer DVD look near as good as blu-ray....The the copied versions lose a significant amount of data to compress them.

An original uncompressed DVD will look great with an up-scaling DVD player, but not to the level of a blu-ray. The up-scaling has to fill in information, while with a blu-ray it is already there.

Pick up a PS3 best of both worlds

depends on your setup

if your running a cheap LCD (apex, emerson, etc) you wont notice any differance

if your running mid line (Vizio,LG, etc) it will help abit more

it also depends on your dvd/blu ray player

just get blu ray and watch blu ray only

they are gay! it's kinda like comparing a pocket pu55y and the real thing...no comparison //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/tongue.gif.6130eb82179565f6db8d26d6001dcd24.gif blu rays players are pretty affordable now...don't waste your money on an up converter hell if you really want one i'll sell you my samsung dvd-hd860 //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif//content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/tongue.gif.6130eb82179565f6db8d26d6001dcd24.gif

DVDs on an upscaling player can look nice, but a true BR is going to be better.

DVDs are more compressed than a BR. Even your dual layer DVDs only hold what 8GB or so? Blu-Ray allows for less compression single layer BR discs are already 25GB capacity, once the DL BR is more common, they are 50GB capacity. No way an upscale player can equal that. Good? Yes. Same? No F'in way.
