DVC power ratings?

In general:

If a sub is advertised as a 1000W RMS sub with dual voice coils, is it assumed this rating is 1000W per coil or 500W per coil?

Is there any problem with leaving one coil disconnected, so only one coil is powered?

1000 watts total.

It will work but all the parameters will change.

I ran a DVC on only one VC for years. You can actually hit a single VC with about 75% of the full DVC rating and still be OK. There are several articles on the web about this. If you are running a sealed box then short out the other VC with a jumper wire and it will keep the parameters close. Running one VC in a ported enclosure will be more unpredictable.
