DLS Ultimate Iridium 12s (in need of serious help!!)

i recently purchased 2 DLS Ultimate Iridium 12 inch subwoofers....

theyre supposed to be 500 watt rms, 1000 watt max or something like that?

dual coil... 4 ohm

when i first got them (a week ago) oh man did they sound amazing! best ive ever heard. and i have friends with w7s and t4s sound stream tarantulas and all that... jbls cvs... and i loved my subs more.

but just today i ran into a problem.

i have them wired to a mtx jackhammer amp... its a 1200 watt amp?

and the subs hit perfect at lower volumes... but when i decided to turn it up and show off a bit... they stopped hitting! and started making a weird noise... like a hollow echoing rattle of some sort? my buddy told me its an air leak? but im thinking.... air leak? theyre in a ported box... how is the box leaking?

another buddy took them out... they looked fine... tested it out... same thing.. perfect on low volume... louder volume.. shit. he said that one of the voice coils could be blow? and since they are dual coil that its most likely the one that hits when at louder volumes? i dont know im know sub wizard.

does anyone know what this could be? i cant see my amp blowing them out. i mean... 1000 watt max ea? thats 2000 watts.... thats almost twice my amp.

any words of wisdom? pls help?!?!

I would check your gains, also make sure things like bass boost are off and whatnot. If they are still playing but making a horrible mechanical sound, it could be a bad voice coil rub? If none of this works, it might be blown subs from you trying to crank it before and clipping the hell out of the signal.

If you have them wired together, I wouldn't push more than 1100 watts to them. How do you have them wired, and did you follow the space recommendation?

A leak could cause that to happen, even if it's ported.

I to love the DLS IR subs. It does sound like an air leak has accrued in the enclosure somewhere. It could be a power issue, if the sound from the sub is motor noise from bottom out/going beyond its motors limits. Now is your amp 1200 watts rms or 1200 peak/max? I'm think 1200 watts rms. So you are in the range of these subs. I have ran them with an DLS A6 on 1 and on 2, had no problems with either. The A6 makes around 750 rms @ 2 ohms. Now give I run them in a sealed box. In the port box the power handling does go down a little.

Push down on the cones evenly and listen for a scrubbing sound, if you hear this sound, yes the voice coil is mis-aligned or damaged.

You have to remember the IR is an SQ based driver with limit xmax. They do get loud, but are limited in motor travel. The DLS SP are a close cousin of the IR, but are much more efficient

Once again great subs.

what exactly do you mean by weird noises? like distortion? seems to me you could just be clipping your signal. how high you got your gains set? im no box expert but is a leaky box a problem with a ported box?

well... the bass boost is on... its always been on tho.... all my gains where set at a car audio store

im not sure how they are wired. i bought them in a box already wired. was told that the box was built to spec and everything was wired properly...

im not sure how an air leak is possible in a ported box being there is a huge hole in the box but ill check...

i pushed down on them and do hear a minor scrubby noise, but only once it reaches the bottom/end of how far it can be pushed. if the coils where mis-aligned how would i go about fixing it? and is it worth fixing?

i dont hear any motor noise.. and what would i do if it was clipping?

i think thats all the questions lol

also... it hit fine for a whole week... turned up really high... could be heard for miles... and sounded good... so im not sure... i was also told something like it could be the subs are hitting in reverse polarity from eachother? w/e that means...

Bass boost should be off.

When you push on the cone and here that scrape, that is normal.

I would say check the enclosure, and maybe wire one of the subs out of phase.

sooo i think i figured it out.... very strange cause the audio worked for a while... but my cd deck just took a shit. and im thinking maybe it was the cd deck the entire time? now the volume doesnt go up at all.. it turns on at a whispering lvl.. and the more you turn it up the more static you hear.. like a bad radio reception... my buddy told me that the cd deck is dead then.

i couldnt find an air leak in the box. the subs didnt look blown or feel blow. the wiring was all good... i might replace the rca's with a better one tho when i put a new deck in.. and put them running down the opposite side of the car as the ground wire is. i hear thats not to good for them to be running on the same side, and could cause that motor idle and reving noise out of the subs, tho mines not making it, better safe than sorry and having to do it later any way right?
