I wanted to try something different in my SPL setup, so I borrowed my team mates Orion 2500d to see how it compared to my Visonik 4000xd amp I run. Results were interesting, the Orion doesnt have a subsonic filter which hurts it right off the bat (the visonik has a SSF)...Lets look at the differences first though :
Visonik 4000xd
Rms Power @ 14.4V DC
1 x 2500W @ 4 Ohm
1 x 3500W @ 2 Ohm
1 x ?????W @ 1 Ohm
Rms Power @ 17V DC
1 x 3000W @ 4 Ohm
1 x 4000W @ 2 Ohm
1 x ????W @ 1 Ohm
Orion 2500d
Rms Power @ 14.4V DC
1 x 1200W @ 4 ohm
1 x 1700W @ 2 ohm
1 x 2500W @ 1 ohm
Subwoofer used :
TC Sounds 18" 4HP
**NOTE** Both amplifiers are powered by three AlphaCell's and one Interstate Lead Acid Batteries
First off let me tell you that im doing 152.7 db Legal on the Termlab in the kick curretnly with the visonik...so I am always looking to improve that score. I had the opportunity to borrow the 2500d from a fellow team mate and decided to see what happened. I was totally shocked how different the two amps sounded when directly swapped. The first thing I noticed right off the bat just playing some rap tunes was that the orion just couldnt pump out the same amount of clear, defined lows as the Visonik did. The bass sounded bland when compaired to my 4000xd, this surprised me alot because I had always thought that Orion was better equipment. Boy was I wrong!
Now dont get me wrong, the Orion still pumped out the notes, I unfortunately didnt have my Termlab setup at the time of the test, but I did have my Goldline SPL meter on and I was only pulling 150 and some change with the Orion installed. While there is a clear number difference in the rated wattages listed above, you and I know both that you really never know what an amp is going to put out until you try it - and this clearly shows that the Visonik is doing its job.
Connecting the Orion 2500d was sort of odd as well, while the Visonik has 1/0 connections on it, the Orion has odd dual 4 gauge terminals on it which made for additional wiring mess and awkward power jumpers from my fuseblock. In the tests I performed (while not real scientific) I had used 90 amps of fusing on both amps, and the Orion seemed to hold a little longer on the three 30 amp fuses I have in my block....which was sort of expected due to the orion being still electrically less output capable than the Visonik.
This was an interesting test......i'll be trying a Powerbass 3000 next in the next few days so we'll see how that works out as well, and i'll report it.
