Actually, I have. In TN, renting a home is more expensive than buying a home...ie, for the same house, it would cost $1-$200 more per month to rent versus buying.
My income will not exponentially increase, meaning in my current position, I am eligible for 2 promotions (to ~$66) and then 1-3% raises until I retire....so I don't want to rent thing I am going to make big bucks here in the future....because I won't.

If I rent out of apprehension, I don't want to make this form of committment with a negative outlook. We have already, somewhat, discussed a nice financial arrangement we are both comfortable with (she paying the utlilities, groceries, 'niceties' and me paying for the mortgage)...in the event of us breaking up, I'd buy out her portion of equity in the home. (probably through a HELOC or something).

Plus, I pay $200 to live at home and I couldn't find a better place for the price. If I am going to rent, I might as well stay at home.

In this market the quickest way to flush money down the toilet can be to buy and then sell within a short amount of time. The housing market really sucks now. Of corse that can be a good thing -- if you can take advantage of that fact on the front end.

The guys on diy are talking me out of the condo. The problem is the lack of homes in my price range in that area. I am thinking a condo would be better than an apt but the people on diyma act like it is the getting the worse of apt living and home living.

condos and apts are basically the same thing. some people would say since you can own it would be a condo. Opposed to One person owning the whole building and renting it out as apartments, but its the same building.....so its still the same apartment building, but since someone bought the whole building nad now rents each unit out, theyre condos? Then some people all townhouses condos, for whatever reason. I think the only difference is the name.
