there was an interesting show about race relations in the late 60s in Detroit.

What's amazing is they still haven't cleaned up all the burnt structures from the riots.

They showed the videos from the riots...I had no idea.

Those blacks where complaining about progress...

ie interstates dividing the neighborhoods. Same thing happened to my dad's neighborhood when they built I-24. He didn't complain.

But I am beginning to think that the sense of community is far stronger/greater with the poor vs. middle class.

For instance, my dad knew the names of the people in the houses on his block. The house across the street from me burned down and the police and stuff were trying to figure out if there was anyone in the house...No one knew how many people lived there, their names, or anything...

The city has never recovered from the riots. After that Coleman Young became mayor and the whites flocked to the suburbs. It also became a trend during the 80's and 90's to torch buildings and homes on devil's night, so it's really hard to determine which buildings were burned in 67 and which were not.

What is devil's night?
It was a documentary on PBS...my gf was curious why I was watching. I said you are always talking this craziness...I thought the race relations in the south were much worse than the north. Turns out i was wrong.

The night before Halloween. Devil's night was a big deal here, hence why D12 named their album Devil's Night.

For the most part the movie 8 Mile was true. It's not as hokie as they make it out, but basically the whole area is segregated.
