I am going to ask an economics question today:
Why would a decline in retail sales cause an increase in overtime.

Think about the economy as a whole, not a specific company. The more 'common sense' the answer, the better.

I have no clue on that one.

Sales are down at lowes and hours decreased as a direct result of that.

But i know you said to not be company specific but thats the only thing that I can base my generalizations on.

More overtime = more purchasing power to the average person. More purchasing power to the average person HOPEFULLY = them spending more money.

Decrease in retail sales causes an increase in overtime

Are we talking just overtime, or an increase in total wages?

The average number of overtime hours worked.

Could it be that the total number of employees has been reduced so that the remaining employees work longer? Probably not, but the thought did occur to me.
