I understand some of the mods played games banning people with the intention of showing the majority of members a fun time, but one of the responsibilities of mods here (imo) is to welcome and encourage new members.

I get the feeling you think I'm arguing. I'm not. Although I would point out that people weren't banned for posting in this thread, their posts were deleted.
