considering your suggestion about downfiring subs, is there a rule of thumb about distance from the floor?

I usually do 3-4 inches... really depends on the movement of the subwoofer. I've done as little as 2.5 inches... but that was when it was a completely flat solid floor... and a low excursion woofer.
