I don't get how people's brains can get so stuck on the plane-treadmill problem? I mean, at first glance I'd forgive someone for thinking it might work....but after telling them about how a plane needs air speed to fly..... it's really....really....really obvious that it won't work.

It's all in how you word it. Is the plane "traveling" as viewed from a fixed point? I skipped that whole other thread. If the plane is literally moving through space..... so say the plane is going 100, the treadmill is going 100....so the plane's tires are effectively going 200..... that's very different than the plane just keeping up with the treadmill.

"Traveling" is subjective on what your point of reference is!

That's like me telling you you're traveling at a few thousand miles an hour..... right now, as you sit at your computer. Are you? Sure the Earth is orbiting, but you could also tell me you aren't going anywhere and it would be correct...in a sense.
