Crossovers

I'm working on a budget bookshelf project for a store, or hell if they sound good enough i might just keep them. Im using a couple HiVi 3" drivers. The box is in the works, and should be done by the end of the week.

Problems:

Crossovers. Can i just run these full range or is a crossover a must? I won't push them hard and they sure won't be in a store. I'm wanting to tackle building one, but i have no idea on the basics. I can solder, and i have pretty decent electronic knowledge. If i keep them, they'll be powered by my Yamaha HTR-5560 (i think its like 65 RMS at 8 ohms, a little more at 4), in the store by an old *** Teac that has LOTS of power on tap.

Are they that hard to build? I know they can't really be that expensive to make, but i lack the know how to build one, and buying one is probably not an option.

The shop won't have a sub, for the sake of being a shop, and i have a good substage.

The reciever in the store is so old school it doesn't have a built in crossover, hell i dont even think my Yamaha does.
It looks like I'm just going to run them full range.
The Yamaha HTR probably has an option of Small or Large for the speakers. Setting them to Small is essentially an active high pass filter.

It's worth trying them full range before building a crossover, but if you need one it shouldn't be too hard to build. The best way in my opinion is to use 1/4" pegboard and make as many direct connections between components as possible. Then just insert the leads through the holes, twist the leads together and fold them down on the underside of the pegboard pulling the components on top as tightly down as possible. Then use zip ties to secure everything, add speaker wire where appropriate, and just go through and solder all the leads on the underside on the board. Getting all the components to fit in the most space efficient manner requiring the least jumper wire and least solder is probably the hardest part.

I know it has the small/large, at least I KNOW it's on there for the center.

The boxes should be finished tomorrow, I'll test them tomorrow and then start the finishing process.

I agree with BrianChia.
Only I like Hot Glue vs Wire Ties...

Its more fun. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif
Im trying to get the most midbass as possible out of these things, anything i can do to enhance it more? My Cerwins **** *** for midbass, but have a pretty kick *** woofer and tweeter. They're party speakers, and they do that great. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif

Also, whats the deal with the foam i see in a lot of HT boxes? What does it do? Do i need it?
