I'm curious what do they do exactly? Do they filter out the highs mids and lows so you only get the sound type you want going through that speaker?

Do you need to get one for every speaker?

in short, they direct signals to where they need to go.

They limit the range of frequency sent to a given speaker. ie: So they don't pile drive a 30Hz note to your tweeter or make your woofer waste power by trying to put out note that a tweeter should.
