couple photoshop howto questions

Trying to do some photochopping to my truck, but im pretty new at the photoshop thing. I have some plans for this summer and want to mock up some images before making my final decision.

1) whats the easiest way to modify color? For example, changing my paint/plastic to black without losing the tone of the paint/texture of paint? So far all i've done is use the magnetic lasso command and burn the spots black.

2)whats the best way to copy images into the image, but still be able to modify that pasted image? cut and paste just resulted in slapping an image smack dab in the middle of my truck, and i was unable to move it.

select the area you want and you can overlay a color into that area and make it opaque and it is kinda like paint lol
