Trojan: US Market Size For Vibrators $1 Billion, Twice The Condom Market Size - Oliver Chiang - SelectStart - Forbes

At CES, well-known condom-maker Trojan is falling for the age-old cliche: size matters. In this case, market size.

The company estimates the market for vibrators in the US to be $1 billion, while the market for condoms is only around $450 million. Trojan wants a piece of that vibrator pie. So, wait a moment, what does this have to do with the Consumer Electronics Show? Trojan has just announced its new technology, the third vibrator model in a series of vibrators that was first introduced last year.

The Trojan Vibrating Twister is so named because its handle can be twisted into four different positions. The vibrator also features multiple speeds. The technology’s nothing new, but what Trojan is doing is bringing a higher level of quality and some small innovations to a highly fragmented category of products. Each new vibrator model goes through extensive R&D. There are 100 checkpoints to get past before Trojan puts its stamp of approval on a vibrator. And the company’s R&D team includes researchers who came from NASA or hold advanced degrees in polymer chemistry.

But aren’t vibrators a bit, well, kinky for the Trojan brand? Trojan VP of marketing Jim Daniels told me that vibrators “are already mainstream.” He cited a recent survey conducted by the Center for ****** Health Promotion at Indiana University, funded by Trojan, of thousands of adults in the US, which concluded that around half of American women have used a vibrator. In addition, many were even sharing them with their partners.

Okay, but what about the retailers? Would the same stores that sell Trojan condoms want to put Trojan vibrators on their shelves? Daniels told me that Walgreens has been selling a Trojan vibrating ring on its shelves since 2006 (except in the seven states where it is illegal to do so). I did not know that.

The Vibrating Twister will come out soon and retail for $60. Daniels says that Trojan currently has 2% of the billion-dollar vibrator market, but wants to grow that number this year. He didn’t disclose sales of previous vibrators but said that the company was “very pleased” with them.

Don't allow my girl to have one. Vibrators make them dependent. Pretty much the only thing I told her she couldn't have. Be a man and please your woman right for christ's sake.

It's just funny to think about a bunch of scientists sitting around brainstorming vibrator designs...How do they test them? The have women come in and use them and rate them? lawl
