Ok I am getting ready to buy some memory for my desk top

quick question

it has a max of 2 g so 1 g in each slot

now it has 512 in one slot

I only am going to buy one memory chip should I buy another 512 or a 1 g

if I do the 1g and the 512 will it preform the same as the 512 and the 512

You probably wont notice a difference between adding 1G or 512mb. Adding 512 would be the safest thing to do. Some boards are finicky when adding different memory amounts, then again some boards will run anything no problem. Would be best to fill both slots with a 1G stick.

Memory is cheap as can be right now.

Buy the 1 gig but set it into the first slot and the 512 into the second. it wil be fine
FYI... I was told that doesnt work becasue the computer wont see the 512. the sticks all have to be the same.

Crucial Rep told me, my roomates are computer techs.

I mean it wont hurt to leave it in there but it wont help it any either.

Not always true. I have run boards with 256,512 and 1g mixed. You wont know if the system will accept the ram until you fire it up though. The statement is true if you have a dual channel setup. Those sticks must be matched.

All boards are different and with it only being able to accept 2gs its probably a few years old and not dual channel.

Checking the Crucial site is a good idea.

Just buy 2x1 gig sticks //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wow.gif.23d729408e9177caa2a0ed6a2ba6588e.gif Memory is so cheap these days it's ridiculous.

or you could just buy a 2 gig stick and get rid of the 512.
he already said it has a 2 gig max 1 gig in each slot //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif

It should be able to support 1 2gig dim in the slot shouldn't it?

no where does it say it wont support a single 2 gig stick. He is making it sound like he doesnt want to buy 2 sticks. only advantage i would see in buying 2 sticks would be for dual channel if his mobo supported it. otherwise i'd say go w/ the 2 gig stick.

Dual channel offers no real tangible performance benefits either. If you can I'd just get 2 1GB sticks for simplicities sake and memory is so cheap. Buying a 1gb stick should be fine and is what I'd recommend.
