o right, i have a compaq comp with 512MB PC2700 DDR-SDRAM memory

Can a comp have two memory cards?

whats the PC2700 for?

whats the diffenece from DDR-DIMM and DDR-SDRAM

i'm thinking of getting two or one 1GB memory card(s)

what should i get?

is it easy to install? Any programming?

SDRAM I heard is pretty slow, its the newest tho. PC2700 is only compatible with certain motherboards and so on. You will need to read about your motherboard to see which memory is compatible. If it is newer it will probably be like PC3400 or sumthing. DDR2 is the best IMO. You should be able to install 2 sticks, but you need to look at your board. All you do to install is pop the old one out and put the new one in.

Yes - mine has three.

Generally this number is indicative of how fast the RAM is. The higher, the better (as I understand it and I know less than nothing about computers so this could be way off)

The type of slot it plugs into on your motherboard.

Okay - if you're board will support 2 gigs of RAM then go for it. Yes - RAM is pretty easy to install. Remove the old and replace it with the new. be careful, of course - electronic components generally don't care for being forced, but other than that it isn't a difficult operation. There's no programming. RAM is either there to be used or it isn't.

What kind of processor/mobo? What are you doing that you need 2 gigs of ram?You could hit up newegg, they'd prolly help ya out....great prices too.
the motherboard has two slots and only has one card right now.

- what kind of motherboard? i don't know

- processor: 3200+ AMD AthlonTH XP

Computer: Compaq Model: sr1330nx

i guess with one 1GB will do

might as well get two 1gig sticks ram is cheap right now..and if you game or anything then 2 gigs will be nice. Dont buy anything faster than pc2700 (or at least dont pay more for it because its faster), because if thats what your FSBand current ram is it wont run any faster then pc2700 anyways..its a compaq so its not like your trying to overclock it and might actually use the faster memory.

x2 on getting it form newegg.com

memory manf. sites and retail sites will have memory 'configurators' to assist you with which RAM to purchase. Your manual will have specs, compaq's site should also.

first of all, what does memory do?

The more memory a comp has, the more programs u can run at the same time without a problem, right?

PC3200 is just as cheap as PC2700 and it offers more headroom for overclocking, thus making it the obvious choice. Any 184-pin DDR memory will work with his setup as long as it's capable of at least 333 MHz ...
Heh i think the compaq bios would keep him from overclocking much.. but if he ever puts it into another comp i guess..i wasnt sure if he mobo was dual channel or not...probably not..but thats why i said to get two 1 gig sticks...plus memory is hella cheap right now...i just ordered two 1 gig sticks for my laptop..good for games //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif

The difference between 2 GB and 1.5 GB is minimal in most applications and, odds are, he'd be better off spending the money he'd use on the 2nd stick to upgrade something else in his computer (like his graphics card) ...
hehe, upgrade the graphics card for the price of a memory stick. That makes me giggle.
