It is either the Smitfraud that someone mentioned earlier or one of those Antivirus2008, xp antivirus 2009....etc Those fake antivirus ones are annoying as shit. I have fixed probably 4-6 computers with this problem. The first thing I always do is Run > msconfig > go to the startup tab and make sure you know everything that is running on startup. Once you shut it off from there, it shouldn't pop up and slow everything down as soon as you boot up windows..... Next thing I would do is RUN> services.msc Find a list of services that should be running and see if there are a bunch extra. If there are, I would go ahead and reformat, because it is hard to remove a ton of services. I have seen some of them switch back to automatically run after I had changed it to disabled. They are really finicky. Last thing I usually do is remove all of the registry keys that are associated with the program. Run> regedit Alot of websites are going to tell you a specific name that the Fake Antivirus uses for registry keys, but in my experience I have seen them be named just random letters. Example: rxpkmrisq or just something that doesn't make any sense It should be listed somewhere under HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\ One friend of mine had it for long enough, that it denied access to my computer, control panel....etc and it also started erasing icons on the start menu. If it ends up being bad enough, you should just back up whatever you need and do a fresh reformat.
