Columbia Is Gone.

i think that they have all but ruled out terrorism. there was alot of something that feel off of the shuttle on lift-off that might have something to do with it.

they said that even the best most sophisticated surface to air missles couldn't reach up that high, so the only way it could have been terrorist is if they set something on the aircraft which is highly doubtful.

plus i dont know how a surface to air missle could catch that thing....it was going faster then a bullet.

yeah it was presumable a large amount of the tiles. the tiles are like 5 by inches, so it was large amount of them if that is what it was. some tiles always fall off on launch but it would of had to be a huge amount to cause something like this.

um...howd this get to be a sticky?

and what time did this happen..i just started watchin CNN //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/confused.gif.e820e0216602db4765798ac39d28caa9.gif

i think the shuttle was scheduled to land in Florida at 8:15am this morning, but they were about 8min away (over Texas) and it blew up/fell apart. man that thing was goin 12,000mph...it would take like less than 15min to get all the way across the US. Plus I heard they were traveling at mach 18 when they exploded ( 760 x 18 = 13,680mph) and they said earlier in the mission they reached speeds of mach 25! (760x25=19,000mph) //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/crazy.gif.c13912c32de98515d3142759a824dae7.gif//content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/eek.gif.771b7a90cf45cabdc554ff1121c21c4a.gif

From the little bits of info that have come out so far it sounds like some debris hit the left wing on take off and probably did slight structural damage (knocked off a few tiles).

The tiles are ceramic, they serve as the heat shield on re-entry b/c air friction creates temperatures of a couple thousand degrees on leading edges of the shuttle (nose and wings). I saw an interview with Sally Ride talking about re-entry. She said out the windows all you can see is bright orange and pink light. Basically, during re-entry the shuttle becomes a fireball, and that's when things go well.

I think if the shuttle had lost just one tile on the leading edge of the wing it would be enough to cause a hot spot and it wouldn't take long for the wing to fall apart, and I think we can all imagine what would happen after that.

It's a terrible tragedy, but hopefully we can all recognize that in that line of work there are 2 possible outcomes...Perfection, or imperfection...life or death. It's the price of space exploration. I'm sure NASA will learn another thousand details from the investigation, they'll figure out why this happened and it will never happen again.

I had flash backs from sitting in my 3rd grade class and watching the news all day, and seeing my teacher who seemed like a rock, just break down, very sad day, and it all kinda came back

the thing is though, a few tiles wouldn't have done this. I am no expert but was once very into this stuff. on lift off, the shuttle loses a large amount of the tiles, due to the vibrations and such. now if one area of the wing was hit that could have knocked off enough to force this sort of thing to happen. they said that just before it broke up, there was a 60 degree rise in temperature, and the shuttle automatically adjusted for this. don't know how they adjusted. they are also saying that the part that feel off might have make a small fracture in the wheel well so to speak. there are so many millions of possibilities of things that have could have gone wrong. a math geek run the possible numbers of things that could go wrong and how often. it was something like one in every 16 flights, should result in death. and that was just for the shuttle. nasa has had 17 deaths since it was orginally started and columbia had been in space 28 times I belive. I am just thankful that it would've had to have been an extremly fast death. I pray for the families and the lives that were lost, and that no one will use this as an example of why we should explore space

my school is making us write this letter to the president showing our caring for them and how sad we are..im like WTF were in the bahamas....WTF WTF i dunno its sad an all but my God there making us write a letter to the whtie house //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/frown.gif.a3531fa0534503350665a1e957861287.gif.....how do you make a sticky never seen one b4 ?
