I am posting this because it seems like there are a bunch of people on here with the CD7000 (I would like there input) and a friend of mine asked me as well.
Well after owning the Eclipse CD7000 and being told that it would sound much better than my first 7998 (which I was having issues with) I have gone back to the 7998. I think that the CD7000 is probably one of the worst decks that I have ever used. The buttons were very touchy (I would go to change a song and would instead be put into the fader and sub options), I dont really like flashy shit so the screen was just annoying with all the planes flying around and shit, the volume knob was huge, there was no designated pause button, the face wouldnt automatically close when a CD was inserted, the remote was very slow to react, you cant turn off the internal amp, and the FM reception absolutely blew monkey balls.
I bought the CD7000 because I was having some issues with my 7998 and because I was told that it would sound much better. Well to be perfectly honest there is really no comparison on SQ between the two decks the 7998 absolutely owns the 7000. The 7000 has a terrible noise floor problem so bad that at times I would get so sick of listening to the hissing noise it would have to turn the deck off. The 7000 took much more EQing to get to sound good as well and the music still had a very unnatural sound to it. It also lost much of its clarity at louder volumes with rock music so much so that it would cause my ears to fatigue.
While some of you may say 24bit DAC vs 1bit DAC and blah blah, I really do believe that when Alpine built the 7998 they used some of the best internals out there and because of that this deck still shines as one of the best. When I installed the 7998 again the first thing I noticed was that the noise was gone (noise meaning noise floor), my subs hit harder and cleaner, my midbass was much punchier and tweets were cleaner and more detailed (the separation that I was missing was back). My sound stage also moved from about eye level and off the steering wheel all the way up to the headliner and out on to the hood. While the 7998 does have a few things that I dont like the good far out weigh the bad.
