CD Changer Compatability

Does anyone know why CD changers / head units from different brands are not compatible? I know HU's are all different, but just wondering why there was never a standard way to connect/control a CD changer. After all, I think most connect using the same type of cables, and there is only so many things you can do with the changer (play, pause, stop, skip, change disc).

Any thoughts? The reason I am asking is that I think my HU could be dead, and if I get an aftermarket HU I lose my Cd changer, so this subject was on my mind a little.
