carfax only lists accidents that werer reported to the insurance. my mom bought an alero that had its rear quarter replaced and the carfax said it was NEVER in an accident.
I think carfax says they will buy back a car that has false info on their sheets, but I know there has to be loop-holes around it.
You also have to remember to look over the body yourself the best you can to find past damage as a lot of people get stuff fixed without insurance being involved so that would not be covered.
If you know someone who knows body work it would be good to bring them along with you to look for some of the telltale signs of damage but nothing is going to be 100%

We only found out because the truck partially filled with water after a carwash. we then pulled back the trunk carpet, and found alot of expanding foam //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/crap.gif.7f4dd41e3e9b23fbd170a1ee6f65cecc.gif
