CB Competition.

Actually had a guy come in the shop awhile talking about them 'back in the day'.

The person that could send and receive from the farthest distance wins.

Doesnt look like a CB setup, looks more like an old ham radio setup with that groundplane antenna on that one Suburban.

It is a CB Competition

It called a Key Down

And it works just like a Db Drag racing

Two vehicles go head to head; they both Key-Up and talk at the same time (try to over power the other) normally for 5-10 seconds

Some one called the water-Gater calls back with the winner (he tape records the key-down round)

I use to compete in theses, had a lot of fun doing it

They still do it today, you just don’t hear about it unless you’re in it

Theses picture were only a few years ago (maybe 7)

You would never guess of how powerful some of the set -ups were (legal is only 4 watts)

Don't have a problem with it, until they decide to take that amplifier and go on 10 meters with it...

Ironically, increasing power is the worst way to be heard farther if that's your goal, but all in the spirit of competition, I guess.

I remember this about 2 years ago actually. CB competition, was quite unique. I went to one in FT. Lupton and it was interesting. Heard some stories from competitors that they had got the signal so strong once, it caused a on-lookers camera to pick up static.
