I think you're right.
It depends on many factors whether or not you get a clipped signal. Output voltage from the head unit is probably one of the main ones. A very high output voltage from the HU might cause signal to clip at for example 6 or 8 on the amp's gain knob. Whereas low output voltage from the HU might cause signal to clip at 10 or not at all.
