well guys... since my SE's have been on vacation i havent

been neglecting my car audio... ive actually been quite

busy building my first box... not only my first box... but

my first ported box...

its 1.8^3 after displacement and port area and its tuned

to 32hz as to RE's specs for a single SE 12"

i made it out of the usual 3/4 mdf which is very easy to

work with... the only tools i needed were a circular saw,

jig saw and a drill... odds and ends included some silcone

and gorilla glue and lots and lots of screws...

id like to thank those who helped me... but i dont know

if those people would like to be thanked publicly... but

i do thank you...

this just goes to show that building your own box can be

done quite easily and at a much lower cost and higher

quality than buying a pre fab box... i think i spent less than

50$ in supplies...

i know its not carpetted yet... but i will be doing that when

i get some time... right now its in my girlfriends car loaded

with a JBL 125 watt 12" sub... she used to have 2 12"s of

these JBL's sealed... but this single one ported is EVEN LOUDER

than the 2 sealed... its awesome!!!

i am rather proud of my first stab at box building and just

wanted to share and show anyone who may be leary of

taking this project on that it can be done by even the

newest of noobs... AND ITS WORTH IT!!!!

ok... im done... thanks for listening...

mind posting the dimensions for this box? looks good.

whats up with the foam pad behind the speaker? was it not sealed all the way or sommin?

looks good mang. glad its super loud //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

the foam is just some packing foam i borrowed from

an empty box at work... i just used it to make absolutely

sure that the sub would seal in the hole... the gasket on

a buy one get one 3 year old sub is not exactly air tight...

when i load my SE it will be a lot nicer... that JBL was just

for testing really...

i know you said your glad its loud... but the SQ hasnt dropped

off hardly any... well for that sub it wasnt the best anyways...

but it didnt get any worse... just a lot louder... i cant wait to

get my SE in there...

where should a SSF be set to a box tuned to 32hz???????????????

the box is externally 21.5 wide about 16.5 tall and about 17 deep...

somewhere around there... its not exactly small... not sure the

exact dimensions off hand...

The subsonic frequency filter should be tuned to 1/2 octave below tuning.

What is an octave you say?

An octave does not have a predetermined value. A change in frequency of a multiple of 2, means a change of one octave. An octave has to have a starting point. If the starting point is 1000hz, one octave up is 2000hz. One octave down from 1000hz is 500hz. Equalizers commonly have one octave spacing between their slider controls.
So in your case, set the SSF to 32-[(1/4)32] = 24Hz

looks alright, good job. And glad you like it... Now, imagine what it would be like with (2) 12's...

Here is where the addiction starts //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif

Again, good job.

-Nick

thats basically like turning the SSF on and

barely turning it... which is pretty much what

i did... i wasnt too concerned with the sub

thats in the box now... but once i load my

SE in there i want to set it up right...

i cant imagine it with 2 12"s... that would be

insane... it would even be insane with these

JBL's...

i want my SEs back!!! c'mon tomorrow hurry

up and get here...

thank nick!!!

Looks awsome. I am a noob and never built a box b4 myself. I was thinking of building sealed but after ur post I am not sure. Wanna help me to build a box? Since u prolly already did bunch of reserch and stuff. I have 2 10" alphasonics 200 serries lying around without roof over them it would be nice to place them in house with windows so screems could be herd miles and miles away //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif.

Let me know if you have time to instruct me on the project.

Nice job.

-Greg.

this was my first box... so i dont know if im the guy

to help you design anything so fancy with windows

and stuff... but id sure like to try and help... what

kind of vehicle??? for spacial reasons...

thanks everybody... box building is a great $$$

savings... i cant believe they get away with

charging 200$ for boxes at shops... maybe 100$

would be more fair... greedy shops...

i do recommend a table saw... with the circular

saw you have to be pretty **** accurate... its

a little nerve racking...

looks good for a first. After a few more they will be flawless. Not bad at all though. Good work.

thats what im hoping... the box is too big for my

gf's car so im already going to be building another

one...

maybe ill let come caraudio members take a look

at the plans so i know ive got it right... but ****...

the box i built sounds great... so i hope i can do

it again...

id love to get "good" at it and be able to build

boxes for people... its kinda fun and the shops

are such a rip off... i could use some $$$ for

more of my own car audio... need some help

on the interior next...

Lol that was a joke by window I meant port. Well anyway my car is an old bimmer 635csi. And I have about 2.2 ft^3 to play around in the trunk. Here is the manual for the woofers I am using (its a psw210) http://www.alphasonik.com/200Series_Woofer.pdf My box is actually really simple. Its a right trapezoid looking that feets two woofers in it. So check it out and let me know if you are familiar with any of that stuff.

Thanks -Greg.

just one more question out of this post...

what kind of carpet should i use for the box and where

should i get it...

i assume its just some sort of heavy duty indoor outdoor

stuff but i wanted to make sure... how much can i expect

to pay for enough to cover a 16.5 x 21.5 x 14.75 [externally]

inch box???

also... whats the best way to attach it? gorilla glue, staple gun???

thanks.

you can use auto carpet from partsexpress.com. Most people attach it with spray adhesive, I usually use 3M super90. I think the carptet is only like 4-5 dollars per yard.

And about setting the SSF, it is also dependent upon the crossover slope...you don't set a crossover with a 6db/oct slope at the same point you do for one that's 24db/oct....

I *believe* the viper in your sig has 24db/oct though?? so you should be ok

Geoff - DO NOT order carpet off the internet. Save yourself the time & shipping.

Run by Darryl's on Dick Rd and pick up any of 4 colors for ~$4 a yard (54"x36"). Pick up a can of 3M spray adhesive for $2.97 at Valu or Home Depot. Get a cheap razor knife. Have fun.

Theres no reason to order everything off of the internet.

Check the SD tutorials in the subwoofer section for a good instruction/example thread.

What makes you say that?

well... i went on a mission during my lunch break

and managed to get myself some remnant carpet

at GCO for 5$ !!! its plenty big and seems like its

going to be pretty sturdy so you cant go wrong with

that... its a little ugly blue... but for 5$ who gives

a crap...

i also got some spray adhesive at michaels craftss

for like 3 bucks or so... not sure exactly how much

but the adhesive and a reindeer stocking for the

girlfriend was only like 5.75$ so again... cant really

go wrong...

ill go through the tutorial and get to work making

my box look a little snazzier once i get home...

my SE's should be waiting at my door for me

according to FEDEX so...

WOOOOOOOOOHHHHOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

not that my 3 year old single JBL 12" 125 watt isnt cutting

the mustard... but im happy to have my SE's home...

btw... about that SSF setting... i am not using the

bass gain db knob at all... i am just going to set my

input sensativity and crossover and not mess with

the phase or bass gain...

well i do have to set the SSF too... which is what the

question is about... it also ***** that they give you

this SSF with one side 20hz and one side 50hz and

you have to figure out where the hell 24 hz is...

Keep in mind that most home carpeting mediums have some kind of backing... Most cabinet carpet has none to very little.

It may be a pain to work with the stuff from GCO.

Other wise, good luck!
