Breaking Gelcap of medicine

Hey guys, I just got these cough suppressant gelcapsules, and I have a really bad cough and need to have them work as soon as possible. Would cutting or poking a hole in one of these make it hit me faster? I notice it takes up to an additional hour for them to start working in the gel form.

I could be wrong but I think part of the whole 'gelcap' thing is to do some type of 'time release' thing with them. You could always call the pharmacy and ask.

They are packaged that way for a reason, don't mess with it. If you take it out of the gel cap then it won't be administered the way its supposed to, and you won't get the effects of the medicine. Will it be too strong or will it change the chemistry of the medicine making it unsafe?

I doubt it'll make it unsafe or change the chemistry of it, but it won't be absorbed the right way. Certain medications are meant to be absorbed through different methods to maximize the efficiency of the meds and make it work the best way possible.
