Big difference in ddos (or even dos) and the spam that ends up here.

DDoS = tens, hundreds or even thousands of computers (bots) sending out data (usually in large packets) causing both the server resources on the targetted system and also using up all open connections to a system.

The spam that goes on here is just again bots but they look for thinks where they can easily spam usually targetting forums which do not require signups and verification to post, guestbooks, and anywhere else they can post something to a site that is viewable by others on the internet without having to actually interact with anything.

Either way they both **** and will never end due to the fact that things such as DoS attacks and similar are so hard to trace and often the people running them are overseas thus hard to prosecute.
