Most people have best luck with them in a ported enclosure. I've heard that many, many times - so many that I've only run mine ported.

Are they more of SPL subs than SQ?

i think the MT series is more toward spl but all the other ones like

the XXX ,MX ,Se, RE is more toward sq.
