In addition to the physical threat black people pose is the political danger that slavery represents. Black people, as the living representation of slavery, pose a danger to the liberty of free white Americans. The institution of slavery teaches our young that tyranny and despotism is acceptable (Jefferson 214). Slavery further attacks white liberty by destroying the basis of our natural rights. Jefferson asks, “can the liberties of a nation be thought secure when we have removed their only firm basis, a conviction in the minds of the people that these liberties are of the gift of God? (Jefferson 216). No one can be safe from tyranny if our basis for liberty is based on blood.
