bass unclear at low volumes

I have 3 JL audio 12w6 version 1 wired to 1 ohm (parallel voice and speakers) hooked up to a PG Ti800.1. I think my ground is good (I am going to check when I get off of work with my DMM), but it may not be. The bass eq on the amp is turned to -12db centered at 250Hz, and should not affect anything since I am using the LPF on my HU at 80Hz with an 18db/octave slope. The gains have been set appropriately using my DMM. The problem I have is that the bass sounds really garbled and unclear at low volumes (not really low, about when the subs actually start moving). I can only tell this when I put my head close to the speakers (in the back of my Tahoe), when I am in my front seat I can't really tell. It seems like there is nice sounding bass coming through combined with totally unclear base. Although, when I turn my volume up to listening level (to where each sub is getting ~350 - 400 wrms) the bass sounds pretty good, maybe could be a little clearer. Could this be noise, a bad ground, or something else? Thanks.

Later.
