They will kill midbass and muddy up your midrange if you don't cut out the back. If you crammed polyfil in there with a mid, it would surely sound like even worse **** than they already do.

I have a pair in my doors but I have cut out the back, side, and bottom to basically protect from water falling directly onto the speakers.

 
What do you mean by "separate"? Do you mean in the same enclosure as the other speakers sharing the same airspace? If so, then no, they won't really fill that purpose. I would still not want to put them on a 4" or anything playing below 1khz as it will make it sound like ****.

Those look like decent cheaper options for sure and probably fine for some systems, but I agree, Audiocontrol has been making high quality stuff...
