Baffles Behind my 6.5" Boat Speakers - Sound Impact?

I'm putting four Pioneer TS-A1675R 6.5" speakers in my boat. The rears will be mounted in a compartment that could also have some gear placed in it. I'm considering some foam or plastic baffles to protect the back side. Realistically, I'll try to keep these compartments empty for best sounds quality (one side will share space with a 10" subwoofer too), so the protection may be overkill. These spaces are about 18 x 18 x 30. If I use baffles, what difference could I expect versus no baffles? I'm thinking diminished bass from the 6.5s; even with a sub I don't want restrict the 6.5s bass abilities too much. Thoughts would be appreciated.
