WMP can play .avi files...unless it's actually a xvid or divx with a .avi tag...

Google for combined community codec pack. It's all the player you'll ever need, comes with media player classic and VLC player.

i would definitely download the pack allstar mentioned.

but as far as .avi movies go, i've always had the best luck (especially as far as windowed playback) with the divx player. http://www.divx.com

VLC is nice, it playes oggvorbis and has a pretty decient EQ

I dislike quicktime as a stand-alone, but I do have the QT plug-in for firefox that works quite nicely with porn.
