Have you ever considered to customize earplugs for music listening ? You would have to go through an audiometric test first, and based on the results an specialist would built earplugs that filter out frequencies, attenuating those that bother you the most, and maybe increasing others. The result would be like having your own customized equalizers installed in your ears. Do you think this can work in a car audio environment ?

the earplugs would probably have to be done electronically, as tuning a passive filter would be insanely tough.
So, you're now looking at hearing aids that can be tuned with the curve you want.

Personally, I think a better method would be to equalize your car system and use passive earplugs that lower the sound equally across the spectrum (like those Etymotic ones).

Best strictly earplugs I've used were the ones I was issued at boot camp in 2009. I still use them regularly. They're rubber and have three flanges and come in three sizes I believe.

However, I prefer isolating headphones, because they are designed to keep noise out, and they are comfortable enough to wear all day. Excellent for construction sites that allow them.

But then you could just use the volume knob to rather than pay for earplugs.

That is the perfect spot to do that. OEM sub may interfere with the new one and cause cancellation.
