I'm listening to STP on youtube right now and I had a question/thought.....

Are musicians, by nature, self destructive and that is the personality type of a succesful singer/songwriter/etc.

or does the industry, the fans, the hype do it to them?

Yes, I am aware that not all musicians go crazy into drugs and that it could be a bit of both. If you look at some of the really great musicians though, it seems like they live this wild, dangerous life and eventually go down a road that leads to death or just fallout.

I just can't figure out if they were like that before the fame or if the fame did that to them.

well since we are talking about Scott W. .....yes the drugs made his songs...he confessed that he was jacked up on heroin when he wrote all of the ones that he is credited with writing.

It may start with one song, if they were high and wrote one song or recorded one, and it explodes, giving them fame, It may push them to use drugs as a tool for success.

I don't think artists are actually FORCED to start taking drugs though from the fame just to be successful, most likely they were already doing it and it was only when the spotlight was on them that people actually realized it.

All speculation though...

Yeah, I guess it would be more of a person by person situation. It just seems so many of the "greats" follow the same path of destruction and end up dead.

Now perhaps we just idolize the ones that die *shrug*

For some reason many, many artist that write their own music use drugs. I know this isnt the only reason.

Bands like STP and sublime come to mind.

On another side, its all about the environment. I played in a band for many years played many, many shows...I also did a lot of drugs and drinking. Now that I am out of the music scene I havent done drugs in a long time, nor been around them. So I believe that its the music scene that has them.
