There's a world of difference. The SJ has much more bottom end power even in stock form than the Kawi. You need the bottom end to pop you out of the water and up the face of the wave. The SJ 650 can be modded for very little money as parts are all over the place. The SJ has a much better hull for freestyle and likes to slide around unlike the SX. With the SJ you have a great starting point for future mods where with the SX you are just about at the end of the road. Just about all who start out on the SX ditch them for something else (SJ) within a few months and those who don't wish they could. Save your self a lot of money by starting off with the best possible platform. Ride the snot out of it, mod it but keep your eyes open for parts to build a 701. The 650 crank along with all electrics are the same as the 701's so all you will need is a set of cases (give or take $100), a cylinder ($100- 150), a head (stock heads you can get free) and a set of pistons. For under $500 you can have a nice 701 that will run for ever. If and when you get the 650 there are a few things that you can do right of the bat for little $$ that will make a world of difference. Put it this way, a few years ago I had a 650 square with a pipe and a few other mods that could keep up with piped 701's. In places like The Monster Hole I had just as much fun as the rest of the crew (surf's a great equalizer) but where they would use 2 tanks of fuel I would barely burn through one. Now my current motor is a totally different animal but I love it. Get a square and the Surf ****s will hook you up with all necessary gear to make it the best ski for your budget.
