Sempron=cheap. Lower performance processor.

Intel M processors are suppose to manage the power better so as to have longer battery life on laptops/mobile applications.

3000+ means that it will run like a 3.0 ghz computer would run just that its an actual slower speed
Partially right. It means it has the equivalent computing power of an originall Athlon Thunderbird Processor of 3ghz, but runs much slower. It is an efficiency rating and shouldn't be used to make your fianl judgement of a PC in anyway. What you need to do is decide what you need the PC to do, then decide what you need in it. For just office apps and browsing email/net this is just fine and will work great. It will be on the slow side with multimedia editing and gaming.

I agree with you all that AMD has intel by the balls, however, Intels newest mobile line the core duo is amazing. I have an AMD laptop, and it's not as impressive as i once thought it was. I feel as though for desktops, AMD all the way, but for laptops..intel for teh win. One day at work i decided to compare two computers speedwise. I compared an HP A1250N desktop, which is a dual core 3800+ athlon 64 with 1gb of ram. I compared it to a Toshiba Qosmio G25av500, which is a centrino 2.0 i believe. I did the PI1m test, which calculates the the millionth digit of PI out, you know..3.14.....all the way to the one millionth number.

this is a true test of processing power, and for some reason the centrino laptop owned the hp desktop in this test.

but, AMD has a new line of cpus comign out, hopefully within the next 5-6 weeks

the turion X2 is amd's repsonse to the core duo.

if ya ever need help buying/comparing a laptop let me know, i sell this sheeit everyday

At a higher cost though. One has to weigh in what they actually need out of their laptop. The real world difference in batter life is also negligible as are most things when you compare the theory on paper to actual application. For all intent purposes the difference in performance won't be felt by the average user who uses it for menial tasks and the battery life may add 30 more minutes with a mobile Pentium. One has to decide whether those 30 mins are crucial for them and worth the added cost. If MM editing of any kind os to be done on the laptop, then I would definitely get a nice duo setup. I however do editing on my main PC at home and use my laptop as just a portable office, so it doesn't need power.

No one said that AMD had intel by the balls....

In terms of gaming, yes... in terms of managing system resources, no.

all the systems ive built myself ive used AMD... the one laptop i bought is intel PM..its a nice laptop and i dont regret buying it.. battery life sucks *** but i think that has more to do with a 17" screen and a GF 6800..

If you look at the history of the two companies, AMD did start off by making reverse engineered Intel based chips to help meet industry demand. In 2003 the Opteron processor changed all that. It was the first dual core processor and was intended for server applications. Based solely on the performance of that architecture, AMD's market share has grown measurably since then.

AMD has an answer to the Centrino M in the shape of the low wattage Turion64 processor. Pretty much the same battery life as a Centrino running on similar architectured MSI laptop chassis.
