Alpine iDA-X305 First Thoughts / Review

Well, i got my Alpine iDA-X305 in last friday night, and threw it in the same night, and i had all weekend to mess with it and test it out and here are a few of my thoughts on it.

Its sad that the bad list is larger than the good, but there are just a ton of missed opportunity's on this HU. I sort of regret my purchase, but sort of not.

Maybe I’ll cut and paste this review all over the internet, maybe Alpine will see it that way...

The Bad:

1. What’s with the rotary knob? It’s kind of hard to turn fast for quick volume adjustments and fast scrolling through iPod lists. And when you push in and turn, it serves a different function, but I can’t quite figure out what it is... Switching playlists I guess? Anyway, the knob in general just does not feel too solid and sure of itself, and that’s unfortunate...

2. Where’s my album art? I'm pretty sure I have album art for at least half of the music on my 30G iPod, and I’ve only ever seen one album artwork come up since I installed this thing? Does it only display certain artwork or something? If I would have known it didn’t display artwork reliably, I might have considered a different head unit, what’s the use of a full color LCD if all you use it for is text?

3. Wheres my EQ? Bass and treble adjustments, with adjustable frequencies, high pass filter, ect... not bad, but for a head unit like this, why not add a graphic parametric EQ... Come-on!

4. The text on the screen... It takes forever for all the text to come up on the screen, and even then, it doesn’t all fit. So it takes a while to load up all the text, then it take a while more for it to scroll across the screen, I wish there was an option to make it all pop up at once, and then reduce the text size just a bit so more would fit on the screen.

5. No cd player. I know, I know, I agreed to this when I bought the unit, but still... they really couldn’t fit one in there? It’s nice to have.

6. Radio presets? I still don’t know everything about this thing, and still haven’t touched the manual... but I don’t see how there could be any convenient way to use radio presets on this... I’ll look into it though.

7. Build quality...I hate to say this about an Alpine unit but... This thing really doesn’t feel that high quality, the volume knob is plastic, with fake chrome, as is everything else. The removable part of the faceplate is very light, and reminds me of cheaper stereos. I just remember with my CDA-9985 the knob felt solid and sure of itself, and all of the buttons were very high quality and had a good feel to them. I also remember that that faceplate weighed a ton compared to this one.

8. Add ons... Are you serious with this? I could spend three times the cost of the stereo on add-ons that should be build in... HD radio, Bluetooth, Satellite, Imprint Sound Processing, CD changer, ect.

The good:

1. Sound. The unit sounds pretty good, i haven’t upgraded the rest of the system too much yet, but it definitely sounds better than the stock Chrysler/infinity stereo that it replaced.

2. IPod Controls... I think the iPod controls are decent, the menu structure and concepts behind the menus are very similar to the iPod, so you'll get the hang of it quickly. It just makes sense for the most part, which is very important, I’ve tried some other stereos with the iPod and they were not very intuitive at all, and slower.

Over all, I think it’s a decent unit, and it will serve its purpose, but it could be serving it purpose a lot better. I think if I had to give it a star rating, I’d give it a solid three out of five.

Heres a mic of th install in my car... sorry its a phone pic.

i played around with one and i felt the exact same as u, sry for the regretful purchase
I also played with an iDA-X100 at best buy, and i think that seemed like a better unit for many things... i dont really understand the redesign.

Why alpine why?

I don't really regret the purchase, because for what it is, it still does its job better than almost anything else on the market, they just made some very questionable design decisions on it IMHO.

Nice review.

I too just installed a ida-x305 in my neon SRT-4 on friday and was able to play with it this weekend.

I found no problems with any of my album art. You do need to make sure it is all correct in itunes and on your ipod. I think any issues with this must be in ipod/itunes and not the head unit. I'm using a new Nano (4th gen?)

I guess it could be a compatibility issue with an older ipod or older firmware.

I do agree with the rotary knob feeling a little weird. I to wish you could increase the speed rate for volume and it does feel a little flimsy, but if It doesn't break then I can't complain. I found that searching with using "genera" and % worked pretty nice. It was much quicker to narrow down the artist this way.

I think it searches pretty well and better and faster than most other units. When you consider you have your entire library of music on there it's going to take a little bit to find a song. I sure beats digging through a gigantic CD case and swapping CD's.

I think making a number of playlists of your favorites would help too.

I think an EQ would be nice too, but I knew it didn't have one before I bought it. A 9887 may have been a better fit for you (has CD too). It has a better EQ I think. I'm sure Alpine is hoping for "Imprint" buyers with this move.

I agree on the Add ons. Alpine want's to nickle and dime you for all their extra crap.

Overall I'm pretty pleased for a head unit I picked up for under $250.

P.S. I have to look into the radio presets as well. I have no idea how to set them up.//content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/confused.gif.e820e0216602db4765798ac39d28caa9.gif

I looked at the 9887, but i really like the idea of a full color LCD screen... and it is nice...

I was wondering if you could answer a couple very specific questions about the x305's behavior.

I am considering buying one, but no one has one locally to try out, and I'm very picky about certain things on a deck.

All of these questions are for when you are in M.I.X. all mode playing off a USB drive.

1.) Is it possible to hit the Enter button and call up the current folder? (It does do that when not in M.I.X. mode, unless I'm mistaken - it did on the x100.)

2.) Can you reverse back to previous tracks that have played?

3.) If you have more than 4GB (and say more than 1000 songs) on the USB device, does the M.I.X. random play seem to cover all the folders fairly, well, randomly?

These questions stem from my experience demoing the iDA-X100, to which the answers for all of my questions was no. A iDA-X305 was unfortunately not available to demo.

I've read the manuals for both, and it does not say what the behavior is for either deck.

Well, I'm not totally sure i follow you on some of that...

I use an Ipod with mine, so I mostly use playlists. Particularly, i use the top rated playlist on my Ipod, which is around 1600 songs or so, and i just keep it on shuffle in that playlist.

I can go back to songs that have played, or forward or whatever.

If you want i'll throw some music on a usb drive and give some things a try. Just tell me what i should do... Should i just make several folders, all with music, then try mixing all of it through the HU?

That would be great. USB drive play is def. different from iPod play.

Yeah - several folders all with music. Put it in M.I.X. all mode (random play across whole USB drive).

Biggest question: Can you call up the folder/file list with the Enter button, and can you reverse it back to the last played track. On the X100 - all the track navigation controls were locked out when in M.I.X. mode except the skip to next track button. Trying to reverse, or move to the next/prev folder, or move to the last track all did nothing except make the X100 beep at me.

Other question: Does it seem like its hitting all the folders? Cause the x100 I tried definitely wasn't. (Don't know if it was a glitch, needed fimrware update, or maybe hadn't indexed all 8GB of music on the drive I was testing. I don't know.)

I gotta be honest, I'm still not even sure how to get into M.I.X. Mode on this thing, i may have to bust out the manual.

I'll give it a shot for you though.
