Alpine cda-9835 or cda-9887

I have a chance to buy either of these, which one should I go with? the 9835 is about $50 cheaper. I like the motorized faceplate on the 9835 but I also like the faster ipod controls on the 9887. I plan on running either one active so I'm also looking for the best sound quality. I also plan on using the pxa-h701 with it.

If you had the choice, which one would you choose?

Well either way you'll need the RUX controller for the H701. The xover, TA, and EQ on both decks are pretty similar and the H701 might be kind of redundant in my opinion. But it wouldn't be a horrible thing. Gives you more EQ options. I just got the 9887. I think the 9835 is pretty much the same unit, with slower iPod controls. I can't think of any differences. I think the 9835 just has more popularity because more people have had a chance to use it and love it, because it has been out for a few years.

like mike said, if you are planning on using the h701 I would probably look at a different model because like he pointed out, you are going to have to buy the controller. I would personally buy the 9861 so it can be controlled from the unit itself rather then having to buy the controller and the processor.

However out of those two I don't think you can go wrong, since you want an Ipod as well possibly the 9887, being a better choice.

the 9887 has much better DACs, go with that one.

thanks for all the help. looks like I'll go with the 9887. unfortunately I was heading out to pick one up yesterday and noticed an oil leak under my ***** am. well after going by the garage I now have a $400 bill for them having to replace the oil pan. guess the radio will have to wait till next week because my cars in the shop until then.

I have a 10.4" touchscreen to watch movies and stuff on so the animations are really no big deal. I think they look a lil tacky anyway. I'm mostly just looking for something that I can run a 3 way setup and have nice clean sound out of my car. The only thing I wish the 9887 had was a motorized faceplate. I'd like to listen to my ipod some too but obviously I won't get near the sound quality out of it as I will a cd.

Since you've owned both, could you tell me which one you prefer and why? thanks for any help.

the 9887 will sound better than the 9835, becasuse its essentially the same deck with better DACs. Ive owned the 9835 and played with the 9887 a whole lot. PLus the ipod control is leaps and bounds better on the 9887, and faster (generally, and it has quick search, very important if you have a lot of songs). And if the songs on the ipod are encoded high enough, its very difficult to tell the difference between the cd and ipod. (not all songs obviously).

The new Alpine ipod interface is about the best I have used. Since you are running the H701, it really doesn't matter about the processing of either deck.
