saywhat must be the authority... You get this with every genre of music. People who listen to obscure bands/crews whatever think they have the inside track to what is or isn't good. I don't care if you listen to brintney spears or metallica or tribe called quest. If you like it then it's good to you and **** anyone who disagrees.

I just wanted to chime in about all of the other pages...

I never said that Common was hard, I said that he rapped.

In my opinion there are no Hard rappers, just Hard beats that are rapped on.

Everyone that produces a lyrical melody is rapping IMO. Common, Nas, Mos Def, Fat Joe, Big Pun, LL Cool J, Tupac, Big, 3-6 mafia, Lil Jon, Remi martin, etc... THEY ALL RAP...

but the songs that they put out might be classified as an R&B song...

Tupac is a gansta rapper, most would agree, so is BIG and 50 cent...

YET the songs that they have put out might not be considered a rap song.

for example

"message to my unborn child" by tupac

"Staring through my rear View" also by tupac

both can be consider R&b songs...

in the beginning, hip hop was defined by it's catchy hooks, and rap was just the rhyming words and such a-la rapper's delight.

what it is now is too big to be thrown in two categories, and each one serves a purpose imo.

when you go to a club to dance, you dont want to listen and reflect on spoken word - that's what the ppl like 50' are for. If you're looking for something deeper, look elsewhere. Btw, blackstar is pretty sweet - I like their stuff alot. Mos def and talib kwaeli - best alliance in hip hop.

Defining the difference of hip hop and rap is like saying one sub sounds better then the other. Its all subjective....
