Acer aspire 1642wlmi screen?

I had an acer aspire 1642wlmi given to me, and it starts up but the screen looks like it is bad. I hook up the vga to a monitor and the picture seems fine, maybe a little fuzzy but looks good.

The laptop works fine other than the screen. However, I am not sure if it's an issue with the screen or and issue with the flex cable or connector on the motherboard.

I have some pictures maybe you can help me figure it out before i spend the bucks on a new screen.

does the bios screen show ok? if so it is a driver issue, reinstall windows

its not a software issue obviously.

The guy that gave it to me said that he noticed that there was a red line on the left side of the screen one day and it didnt bother him much then he said as the days went by it kept getting worse until it looks like it does now.

In the pictures I posted, the first picture is the laptop screen and the second picture is the monitor plugged into the laptop. So what is on the second picture is the what the first should look like because I took the pictures at the same time.

I tried running windows, but in the picture I am running Ubuntu off the live cd.

because when I tried running windows normally it wouldn't display because my monitor did not support the resolution installed on the laptop

maybe a bad lcd, motherboard, video inverter??

thats what i am trying to figure out. I was hoping someone could tell me by looking at the picture of the symptom
