About how long do i have?

Im just curious on this one, havent seen it asked before so i thought id give it a go..

I have a hatchback, so i like to let my little setup play, fairly loud, leaveing everything open at partys and such outside, it just brightens the atmosphere, and is fun to do, gets good convorsation going, putting on songs for people and such.. but anyway, i am now adding a "real" system, 15" avalanche, with some cdt comps, 1200 watts on the ava, and 400 on the comps, so thats a total of 1600 watts, my question is.. with an optima yellow top, how long do i have to leave the car off and let the system play some music at a pretty good level? I just want to be sure im going to be able to have enough juice to turn the engine over after its all said and done with, i guess i could turn it on every now and then and use the alt to charge the battery a bit, but im just curious about how long i have to let it go and play on its own with the car off.

Thanks

Well I have heard this before and I dont know if it is true or not but here it goes...

If you leave the car running without the engine on you risk the possibility of blowing your amp so i would turn the car over ne wayz or just turn down the gain to save gas if u dont have it turned on. Now this is just a theory I havent ever heard it proved wrong but you know I am not sure I just heard it before.

Also as long as you have a good battery it should work for the whole night unless it is a bad one

Oh man, i never heard that about the amp...

I just got this brand new optima about 2 weeks ago, i leave it playing now for hours with no problem at all, but this is just with an alpine cda-9835, nothing else installed yet... lol, so i can imagine it will be a bit different once i get everything in.

Also, i upgraded the big 3 if that matters any for this situation, and its a 92 camaro, if that also matters...

my guess would be that its prolly not great for your amp since your voltage will automatically drop below 12 volts.. but i dont think its really horrible. and with an optima i would think you can run it as long as you want. you can run those batteries all the way dry and then just recharge em correct? im sure you wouldnt want to hook it up to a charger.. but just try different lengths of time. if you can still start your car no problem after 15 or 30 minutes, then go to 45, then an hour, until you think youve reached the limit as to how long you can play your music and still be able to start the car.

big three doesnt matter cause the cars not running.. but

im nto a voltage expert so take my advice lightly //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif

that is essentially, all wrong. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

How would turning a car off risk blowing the amp? Most amps are built to work from anywhere at about 11v - 15v. Turning the car off gives the amps 12v. No problems with blowing the amps here. I've run my system full blast with the car off and i've never blown an amp as a result.

I'd also like to see a single battery last all night. I can get moderatately quiet levels out of my system running for about 2 hours on a Die Hard Gold battery. at parties and such, you might get away with playing the system fairly loudly for an hour or maybe more. Since you have a Deep cycle battery, there wont be any harm done if you discharge it completely. Take it to your next party, play it loud, and see how long it lasts. Just don't forget your jumper cables //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/tongue.gif.6130eb82179565f6db8d26d6001dcd24.gif

Alright guys, guess im just going to have to play around with it and see how long it wants to give me, i wasnt sure if anyone had done this already or not.

And yes, the yellow tops are deep cycle, meaning you can run the completely dry and charge them again with no problems, many many times.. so im not worried about that, just worried about being somewhere, and not being able to leave... ill just throw the jumpers in the backseat... lol

It still improves the ground points and flow to and from. The only it wouldnt have an affect on is the alternator to batt pos because the alternator isnt running when the motor isnt running.

i remember crutchfield selling this thing that would monitor your voltage then "disconnect" your battery when it dropped below a certain point so you will still have enough juice to start your car. just get one of those. isn't this one of those situations where having multiple deep cycle batteries is a good idea. speaking of batteries do you think a kinetik hc600 is capable of starting a 4 banger or should i look into the hc800 and hope it fit in the spot in my trunk i have for it

I run a yellow with subs, about 500 wrms. Playing at a fairly loud level I get 2 hours. If I play the system w/o subs I get 4.5 hours. Blowing amps IS poss. If the power supply of the amp is UNregulated. most are reg. I always have a spare battery when doing so. Starting your car after playing for a while is killer on ur alt. Best thing is to have a spare battery installed with a isolator. Play the yellow top til its down then stop playing. The other batt is full, then the alt will charge the yellow. When you get home charge the yellow with a charger. failing to charge the (dead) battery will leave ur alt to charge it. If you have a dead battery and try to charge it with just ur alt, it ill take about 12 hrs of straight driving! all this make sence?
