a Rosgate 501bd or a 1001bd

Pretty new to this board, but i was wondering what you guys would think about a setup similar to mine (going in a friend's car). He's got 2 CompVR 12's from Kicker (400w rms) in a slot ported box with 2 cubes each. He loves my 1001bd but can't afford it. He'd be running it at 2ohms. I said if he goes with the 1001bd he'll be overpowering each sub (if gain at full) by about 150w. If he goes with the 501bd at 2 ohms he'd be underpowering them by about 80-100 watts (birthsheet on a 501bd around 600watts usually). So.... opinions? Should he wait for money to buy the 1001 or save a little money and get a 501? peace...

NEVER EVER run your gain at full. And I would go with the 1001...just leaves him more headroom, and also you shouldn't have any problem overpowering them slightly...as long as you're careful. (Keep gains very low.)

I think you may be overpowering them slightly with the 1001bd, but like Ricktc said, "NEVER RUN GAIN AT FULL" I have a 1501bd and burned the voice coil on my S15L74 with the gain turned all the way down. Moral of the story, too much power is just as bad as not enough. I would go with the 1001bd but set the gain on the low side.
