R.I.P. Gossamer!!
I got two packages delivered to my front porch at various times today.
Have a look ~
What's in 'em?
Left:
Kenwood KAC-PS401M monoblock amplifier. An eBay find.
This is the exact same amp as the eXcelon KAC-X401M. (the X401M being the same amp I ran in Gossamer prior to buying the D61500.1 from excelerater) In overseas markets there is no eXcelon lineup separate and apart from the rest of Kenwood's gear. Instead it's a really broad range of "just" Kenwood stuff ranging from what we know as Kenwood's most basic, entry-level stuff to the nicest of eXcelon gear.
@ 12.0vdc input RMS output is rated at 200w @ 4 Ohm and 400w @ 2 Ohm.
@ 14.4vdc input RMS output is rated for 300w @ 4 Ohm and 600w @ 2 Ohm.
I've never had one professionally benched but several online reviews I've read claim output around 700w @ 2 Ohm given 14.2vdc. A member here that uses one has informed me that the one he has runs stable @ 1 Ohm though Kenwood doesn't at all recommend it.
This one is near-mint cosmetically and the seller sent it complete with the rubber boot that goes around the power and ground terminals once installed.
Right:
Polk Audio Momo MMC5250 components. An acquisition via a trade off of here with forum member Ridinhi.
5.25" carbon-fiber midwoofers, 1" silk/polymer composite tweet, and crossovers that allow for bi-amping and a -3dB or -6dB tweeter attenuation in case the output is a tad harsh for your tastes. Complete with chrome hex-head screws for the midwoofer grills to make the install a bit dressy, I guess.
This set looks outstanding for used gear with the only notable issue being a few scuffs on the mounting cups for the tweeters from a previous install. I ws notified of these marks prior to dedicating myself to the deal so I was expecting them. Once they got here and I could eyeball them for myself they aren't actually as serious as I anticipated so that, too, is a bonus.
So ~ Let's hook this ish up and see if it works!
The components sound pretty freggin' good just sitting there running free-air off of an amp rated for 15w X 2 @ 4 ohms, I must say. I reckon they'll really come alive installed in the BudgetMobile being driven by the 100w/channel RMS they are rated for. They'll be getting that from the bridged output of the KAC-746 four-channel sitting there under my multimeter. I have to admit I was a bit skeptical about the output from a 5.25" set as opposed to the 6.5" setup I'm used to in Gossamer but if what they sound like sitting there on the table is any indication of what they can sound like in-car on appropriate power they give me the feeling they can get pretty loud!
Through a series of good finds/outright purchases and a little bit of horse-trading off of here the total cost out-of-pocket for me on the Polk components + the Kenwood amp I'll be driving them with: $105.10/shipped.
KAC-PS401M off of eBay: $94.09/shipped.
The Kenwood eXcelon KFC-Xw10dB subs you see sitting on the floor there - eBay, $115/shipped for the pair around 5 years ago now. I paid an additional $85 for the .8ft^3 per chamber dual-chamber sealed box covered in gray vinyl bringing that total to $200.
Since I do not have another option I'll be having to use the Kenwood tape deck (KRC-608) seen sitting over on the right front of my test bench for a headunit until I can source a CD player that falls in my budget. Said budget is zero currently so please, don't be making offers - I cannot take anyone up on any of them right now. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/laugh.gif.48439b2acf2cfca21620f01e7f77d1e4.gif

At any rate - the tape player's got two sets of (1.8v ftl) preouts and there's enough processing in both amps to get it sounding decent for the moment being hamstrung by a sub-par HU notwithstanding.
I bought the tape deck over 10 years ago now so can we reasonably disregard the pricetag on it since I've more than gotten my money's worth out of it at this point? I think so too.
And I have more than enough spare install accessories sitting around that getting the stuff in the Bronco and properly wired won't be an issue.
So -
$105.10
94.09
200.00 +
$399.19
"Budget" setup, indeed.
A headunit, an above-average set of components, an amp for the comps, a set of decent 10s and enough amp for them, and all the wiring I could possibly need for
Add to that the $100 I paid for the vehicle itself and the $33 I spent on valve cover gaskets the other day and the grand total climbs to $532.19.
) with a fairly tolerable audio setup.
That's a good deal no matter who you are! //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/thumbsup.gif.3287b36ca96645a13a43aff531f37f02.gif
