98 Explorer

Im looking at a 98 Explorer with 170K on it tomorrow for a second vehicle. Body appears to be in mint condition and its got the 4.0 6 cylinder. Any problem areas I should pay special attention to?

Yeah, it's an exploder. They are THE most traded in vehicles. If you're going to get one at least get something 02+. But at the end of the day, it's a ford

Definitely check frame rails and listen for engine knocking or noises. Check exhaust for excessive smoke/oil smell.

No personal experience, but I do see a lot of them still on the road. 170k miles would turn me off unless the price is right and I knew it had been taken care of.

sohc or dohc? I liked mine and didn't give me any problems till the intake gasket, which was a common problem on them, but easy to fix.

dont get the 98 model unless its the limited or eddie bouer. for some reason they have big ****** problems and gasket problems after 150k. and this is from my brothers experiance growing up working on fords non stop. mostly explorers. my post is not a guess and is facts. sry to have to steer you away but id hate to see someone get an exploder and it.... explode. lol good luck though man whatever you decide

I wouldn't buy a used Explorer, ever really, especially the 2nd gen. People beat the crap out of those and they can go south very quickly. Trannies like to go out too.

This aswell. I wasn't sure on the year but I've heard it A LOT. Friend has the Eddie bauer edition and he treats it like absolute shit and its running 220k+ now. He's only had to change a headlight and the alternator.

i have an 00 with the 5.0 awd and love it... i work at at a dealership and an older couple traded it in recently and i picked it up for cheap... its got 120k on it and runs fine. but mine ws a one owner and not beaten on by a kid, goes anywhere in the winter too!!
