92 oldsmobile cutlass supreme problem

ok, so today I was driving with my friend about 15 miles to a place to go sledding.

For maybe 3 days, the heater has been blowing coldish air, so I thought " no biggie".

I'd say that I was probably 4 miles away from my destination when my car started to overheat. I cranked up the heat to full blast ( even though it was blowing cold air) and rolled down my windows.

The second I turned into the park, the car died because it was too hot. I figured I would leave it and come back after some sledding because it would be cool by then.

I barely made it to a gas station when it was way overheating again.

I poured some coolant into the radiator because it needed it and waited for about 20 minutes. started it up and it seemed okay, but about 5 miles down the road, it had crept right back up to overheating.

I drove 35 mph back home ( 10 miles with the windows down and heater full blast).

I did make it home after pissing off a lot of drivers though...

I think it's either the radiator ( I tired to check for leaking, but can't really tell since snow is also dripping from my car) is cracked or the thermostat is not working, which would explain why the heater recently stopped working also.

anyone have any idea? oh, it's got about 130k miles

Thermostat!! I used to drive a 92 Cutty supreme 2dr.. gd that car was a piece of crap.. it was quick *(when it ran) and the paint was good.. and the interior was spotless. but **** it was thing after thing after thing.. I hope u never have 2 replace the Alternator.. Ended up having that done professionally

I sure hope its the thermostat cause replacing the radiator would be expensive...//content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/crap.gif.7f4dd41e3e9b23fbd170a1ee6f65cecc.gif

They are easy to change, and a radiator shop can usually rework them for around $60 if the endcaps are good.

i have a 93 olds culass sup. with the 3.1l motor. that cooling system has 2 air bleeder screws, one near the t-stat housing and the other near the throttle body. even if the t-stat is working but the air has not been blead out it will overheat eventually due to having too much air in the system.

open the bleeder near the t-stat and fill the system up, when the coolant comes out of that bleeder, close it. put the radiator cap back on and start the car, let it warm a bit then carefully open the other bleeder near the throttle body untill coolent comes out. there is a coolant line that runs along the fire wall that goes to the heater core that is notourous for holding air if it isnt bleed out.

to tell if the t-stat is opening, fill the raidator and start the car, when it gets to normal running temp, both the upper and lower hoses should be warm. if one is way hotter than the other then you most likely have a t-stat problem.

whatever you do, just rember to bleed the air out of the system
