8 volt preouts?

ive got a chance to buy a cheap a$$ brand new eclipse HU, and im not real sure what the model is. Anyway, this thing is that it is an 8v preout, and ive read that this isnt good and most amps cant handle it. Can anyone give me some insight on this? ive got a 1000 watt memphis PRD1000.1 amp.

you're fine. it won't even put out 8v while playing music, more than likely less than 1v really. Only @ full volume with 0dB material.

ok, i was just checkin, cause some of the things i have read make it sound like if your pre voltage is too high, some amps cant take it, but i just read that lower impedence HUs are good, and thats one of the main things eclipse describes about this HU is that the impedence is low at only 55.

A lot of amps can't handle the full 8V of output.

But you'll never get close to 8V of output with music at listening levels. Like DBFan said...it'll probably be around 1V.

Just as a reference, I used an 8V Eclipse with an amp who's maximum input voltage was 1.5V....and I never maxed out the inputs of the amp.

This is kind of confusing then. If 8V on a HU gives 1-1.5V then what does a 2V unit give? Safe to say maybe .3V or less????

Probably....I mean this debate gets way out of context....it's all proportional....I have a 16v signal to my amps with the gains all the lowest they can go and I can turn my HU all the way up (76 out of 80) with out clipping (at least I don't hear any - never RTA'ed it).

If 16v you get 10, if 8v you only get 1, if 1v you only get .03 WHATEVER!! Get the higher output voltage if the deck has the features you want and you can afford it...IT DOES MATTER!!!

I measured the "2V" preouts of my Pioneer to be 0.4 vrms at a volume setting of 3/4 and with a 0dB test tone playing. The spec is for 100% volume setting and volume controls are logarithmic, which means the voltage falls off rapidly.

That being said, I wouldn't buy a HU with less than 4 V preouts. My gains are set up pretty high and I don't like it.

if no noise is intoduced why would a high gain setting be bad? if you are not clipping the amp i don't see the problem.

I had no problems with my Denford RFX-8240, which only had 2V rated outputs. I actually really liked that deck.
