64 but AMD

mailny the difference is the cache that the CPU has(L1, L2)....the voltage, proc speeds are pretty similar. You are mainly just paying for the extra cache on the 939. Also another difference is the motherboards that support either a 754 or a 939. The 754's usually have just your regular PCI, AGP slots. Where as the 939 has PCIex1 or PCIe x 16. Plus the 939s have newer chipsets..

all in all eventually the world will upgrade to PCI express and DDR2. Agp is out of the picture now, they've made it as fast it can go (66 times 8x , max data rate = 2.1GB/sec) where as PCIe x 16 is 3.2 GB/sec max data rate. I've heard that DDR2 isn't very much of an advantage compared to 184 pin DDR, but soon it will be probably.

so to sum up, if you just want a good system for cheap go with the 754....if you want to have something that will be very good for now and compatiable with new technology down the road get a 939.....

i dont know of the specifics, but socket 939 is newer than socket 754 and is going to be supported more than socket 754 (i believe they are not making any more socket 754 motherboards). socket 939 also allows for dual channel memory while the socket 754 cant.

get the socket 939, go with a motherboard that has pci express also, might as well get the latest.

thanks for the info 2kchevy. IT was very informational. I think i will go with 939. But does anyone else have more suggestions.

Also i was thinking about going with a dual proccessor motherboard. I built one for a friend a while ago and i liked how it performed. It was a dual 2.4 so (2) 2.4 chips.

Which one to go with dual cpu or 64 bit.

I just built my pc about a month and a half ago. Got everything from Newegg.com for just under $1500. Are you planning to overclock or just leave it stock? I went to a bunch of computer forums similar to this to get advice, so I reccomend doing that. My system was basicly:

Amd 64 3500+ Winchester (not Newcastle)

ASUS A8V Mobo (good for OCing)

EVGA 6800 Ultra (might wanna knock this down a notch or two to save $)

Corsair XMS ram 512 X 2 (Could go with value ram to save money)

I would also reccomend buying a case w/out a power supply and finding a good 400-500 watt power supply (like Thermaltake). I would also say to buy the processor OEM and get a better heatsink than the standard one that comes with the retail. You could also get two hds (1 a 10k raptor to put your Operating system on and another HD around 200 gigs or so for movies, photos, etc...)

This is a socket 939.

i thought 939 was the one with AGP... i am getting on w/ a 3000+ because i heard anything over 3000+ is a waste of money if ur gonna OC

btw, here is the mobo i'm getting, its 939 and it does have AGP

http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=13-130-468&depa=0

EOCF says its the 'least shittiest' NF3 mobo :p NF3 ***** but it'll last a while speedwise, and i need AGP because i just bought a new card :-/

all the 754's I saw on newegg had AGP and PCI slots, except there was one that had a PCI x 1....

the 939's are just more common to have PCIe x 1 and 16 is all I was saying..you may be able to find 939's with agp and stuff, I haven't shopped around in a long time soooo /shrug.

I was planning on over clocking. I do work on computers for msy second job so i know enough about them. However what is this winchestor core thing.

I will also be buying the parts locally since the computer store i work at gets awesome prices.

socket 754 is an older socket, but will still be used for all future semprons, so it will be supported for sometime. the really difference between it and 939 is dual channel memory support. cache sizes depend on the processor core your using. 754 will only have agp & pci slots. socket 939 will have motherboards with either agp and pci or the newer pci-e, but support for these new technologies is dependent on the chipset that the board is based on (ex. nforce3 vs nforce4). if budget isn't too much of an issue then 939 will probably be the better choice because it will most likely support the new amd dual core processors. the winchester core is based on the 90nm process and overclocks much better than the other A64 processor cores. and if you don't already have a agp gfx card then you'd probably wanna go with a nforce4 board with pci-e (dfi is the best brand for overclocking) for more future upgradablity. newegg and zipzoomfly have good prices and you should check them to see if you can get and even better price there.

check out http://www.anandtech.com for more info.

I can say that when you buy video cards, the PCI-E slot makes it a lot easier to manufacture them. A bought a an AGP GF 6200 from newegg, but for $20 less I could have gotten the PCI-E GF 6600.

939 > 754

pciE > pci\agp

amd64 > p4\amd

http://www.bit-tech.com has a good review of some pci-e video cards monte. they also have a KICKASS forum there to help you out. post the specs that are listed above;

...~ $1500...
Amd 64 3500+ Winchester (not Newcastle)

ASUS A8V Mobo socket 939 w\ PCI-E (good for OCing)

EVGA 6800 Ultra - check bit-tech.net forums\front page articles for a great PCIe video card too

Corsair XMS ram 512 X 2 (Could go with value ram to save money)

SEPERATE FROM CASE 400~500w powersupply (nothing cheap here, this is like the alternator for your computer)

SERIAL-ATA (maxtor\wester digital\seagate) harddrives (raid array possibly?)
(edited your post a bit)

but that machiene would be sweet for a while to come. if you like watercooling - that would be a fun way to venture as well.

how do i find out if my 939 is winchester or newcastle? and i have a ASUS A8V mobo!! can i overclock if i happen to have the newcastle core?? i got mine in november.. is that before the winchester chips came out??

winchester is a new core on a smaller process (90nm vs130nm, basically they made it smaller) it runs cooler so it is better for overclocking. you can still over clock a newcastle but i generally will not perform as well. the core just refers to the actual chip, basically not all A64 3000+ are the same, some are made differently and so to denote this the cores are called different things. i have a newcastle core, because at the time the only other option was clawhammer and it didn;t hold much of an advantage over newcastle, but more importantly i got in on the AMD employee purchase.

pci-e is currently no better than agp(nothing needs all that bandwidth, still have barely maxed out agp 4x slot), but if you are planning to keep your computer for along time then i'd be better to go with pci-e because most of the new gfx cards come out first in pci-e and only later in agp if at all.

hey monte carlo...i suggest you go to futuremark.com and register there...then click community at the top and forums to the left....they know a lot and helped me build my computer....also helped me with problems i have and everything else

edit: that is if you haven't already got enough information

Well for my second job i work at a computer store where i build/repair computers. We just don't build many 64 bitter's and i was wanting to build one for myself. I think i got what i need. So thanks guys.
