6-1/2 v.s. 6-3/4

I notice that a lot of speakers are sized as 6-3/4" and say they'll fit 6-1/2" openings. Is that the outside diameter of the mounting ring, or the bolt circle or the actual speaker cone? I'm trying to figure out if I can squeeze 6-1/2s into my doors but I can't seem to find dimensions for a typical speaker. All I can find is the cutout hole size and I need to know the maximum outside diameter.

Anybody got one handy you can measure? Thanks.

Mine are 6 3/4 outside diam. But is listed as a 6.5.. If that helps
