Speed Squares are used in the housing construction trades:

Framing Square:

Here's some advice about Framing Squares.

Rarely will you find a framing square to be actually " square ", I got 4 of the d@mn things and not a one of them is " square ", however, if your not to concerned with being accurate, most framing squares are usually out of square no greater than 1/16" in 24".

last ? i know it best if u plan to use alot of lumber and start getting serious about wood working to form a relationship with a local wood shop like lumber mill. are these local places strictly for lumber cheaper for wood then home depot? does home depot sell trupan? i heard it best to work with cause it lighter than mdf and doesnt split like birch sometimes does.

If your serious about getting into woodworking, the best place you can alot of helpful advise and knowledge is if you have a store in the area that caters to woodworkers, cabinet makers and craftsman.

Lumber mill and lumber yards would not be a place I would goto unless such places have a showroom/store that sells all the tools of the trade for such craftsmen.

Don't, I Repeat, Do Not ask for or take advise from anyone that works in the Tool Department of a Home Depot or Lowes, these people may know the tools but have no practical working knowledge or experience related to woodworking, cabinetmaking.

You would best served to register on a woodworking forum and pick the brains of the folks on these forums and the vast amount of information within these forums would take you a lifetime to absorb and learn.

Also, if you are serious to learn, you should buy a few books on the basic's for the information and reference material.
