4 8" or 2 12"

so i'm building a system for my nephew and had a couple questions. He mainly listens to rap, rock, alternative and an occational classical (he's in orchestra in highschool.....) so i was wondering, would 4 8" aa assasins be better for his taste or would 2 12" assassins work better? (they take up about the sam amount of space and cost pretty much the same, ($180 for 2 12" and $200 for 4 8""

also he doesn't want a hu cause he likes the oem look, so i suggested adding a jl cleansweep or a rf 3sixty.1, which is better for the money (both $300)

well if you have the power and think about the rule that the more surface area the louder it will be so going with the 4 8"s will get louder but not as low as the 12's will
What about sound quality? would the 4 8" be more detailed? and how much lower would 2 12s go?

they are pretty much going to have the same cone area though...

and you'd be lucky to get 8inch woofers rated at 300watts rms each, so 1200watts rms total, while there are many 12inch woofers rated at 1000watts or more, so a potential 2000watts+ rms power handeling for a pair...

8": Sd - 187 cm2

187*4 = 748cm2

12": Sd - 480cm2

480*2 = 960cm2

The 12's would have almost 25% more cone area than the 8's.

I would go for the 12's, personally.

well,i'm getting a new car, and want to try a new system so, i'm giving him a memphis belle mch1300 for his birthday (new version, the big one) so that's running 1100 rms at 1 ohm (the 8" together run 1000 rms together at 1 ohm) and the amp runs 600 rms at 2 ohm and the 2 12" runs 500 rms together at 2 ohms so it's all good

and as for other subs, he wants bang for the buck and he's only starting so he doesn't want's the best bang for the buck. Also he's warried someone might steal his stuff (eventhough he lives in a good neighborhood:rolleyes: and if it happens he'd feel better if the subs only cost 180 bucks)

oh and what about a single tc-3000, my friend is getting rid of his for 200 buck, he used it about a month, now he is getting two 06 xxx's cause he got a promotion...

i have a pair of assassin 12's and they pound pretty hard while still having good sound quality.

i'd go for the 12's and wire them down to 2 ohms. then find an amp that'll do 800W RMS or so at 2 ohms (you could probably get one for $200 if you look hard enough). put them in 3-4ft^3 ported to ~32Hz and it will pound.
